Becoming an Optician, an Accessible Path

PLAR: The Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) process allows candidates with previous training as eye care professionals, who have not been trained in an accredited Canadian institution, to become licensed opticians. The steps include:

  1.  Choose a province
  2.  Apply to NACOR
  3.  Complete an assessment of your current knowledge and skills (CGA)
  4.  Complete bridging modules (If necessary)
  5.  Pass National examination(s)

KNOWLEDGE SELF-ASSESSMENT: Want to find out how your level of knowledge compares to a Canadian optician, try our free knowledge self-assessment tests.  There is one test for eyeglasses and one test for contact lenses and you will receive your results immediately.
